ICOM M802 features

The M802 has many features that makes it an ideal marine radio for the yachtsmen including DSC (digital selective calling) and a DISTRESS ALERTING button for when you are in trouble.

The M802 is easy to install as the unit comes with a remote head. The black box radio part can be mounted out of the way and the remote head located close to the chart table.

The M802 can be interfaced to a modem for SSB email and can be connectioned to a PC for receiving weather fax broadcast.

The M802 has all the marine channels programmed into it, including the 21, 4 MHz simplex channels and 31, 8 MHz simplex channels for yacht to yacht communications.

The M802 also makes for a good broadcast receiver for receiving BBC World Services and other short wave broadcast stations.

If you have an Amateur Radio license the the M802 can be used on the ham radio bands. The M802 does all modes USB, LSB and CW and can be tuned in 100Hz, 1000Hz or 10KHz steps, making very easy to tune across the amateur bands.

Marine Radio Ship Licenses

You should have a Ships Radio License for your VHF marine radio and if you have a new VHF DSC radio an MMSI. On the license you will find a ships callsign and if using DSC an MMSI number. The same callsign and MMSI number is used for the ICOM M802. You should also inform the radio licensing authority that you have an SSB radio onboard your yacht. Here in the UK you do not have to tell them which model of SSB radio you are using.

Unfortunately the ICOM M802 is non approved for use on European Registered vessels and does not have CE approval. However, taking that there is no other approved SSB marine transceiver that is practical for use by yachtsmen, yachtsmen wishing to use HF SSB onboard their yacht have to give the ICOM M802 due consideration.
